Auf der kleinen Insel Othoni sind Ruhe und Einsamkeit garantiert

Wer Korfu in Richtung Nordwesten verlässt, mag staunen darüber, wie kleine eine Insel sein kann auf der noch Menschen leben. Solch kleine Inselchen gibt es viele in Griechenland. Man schätzt rund 3000. Allerdings sind nur rund 200 davon bewohnt. Othoni, mit dem gleichnamigen Hauptort, gehört dazu. Eine ideale Reie für Menschen, die Ruhe, Erholung und eine grosse Portion Einsamkeit suchen.

Auf Othoni leben rund 100 Menschen ständig. Mit einer Fläche von rund 10 Quadratkilometer ist sie die grösste Insel der Othonischen Inselgruppe. Othoni ist eine selbstständige Gemeinde der Präfektur Korfu. Die westlichste Insel und Gemeinde Griechenlands liegt um 20 Kilometer nordwestlich von Korfu. Sie ist 5,6 km lang und 3,6 km breit. Fano ist mit 408 Metern der höchste Berg der Inselgruppe. Die meisten Einwohner leben auch heute noch von der Landwirtschaft und der Fischerei und den wenigen Touristen, die sich hierher verirren.

Fähren: Täglich nach Korfu Stadt - Kerkyra. Von den im Norden Korfus gelegenen Touristenorten werden zudem Ausflüge auf die Inseln angeboten.

If you leave the island of corfu towards north-west, you may be astonished about how small an island can be and even more, that there are still people living on it. In fact, there are many such island on the territory of Greece. One talks about more than 2000. But only 200 of them are inhabited. The island of Othoni is one of them. An ideal island for people looking for silence and solitude.

There are only 100 people leaving continuously on the island of Othoni. Covering about 10 square kilometers, the island is the biggest of the island group called othonian islands (or Diapontia Islands) which consists of the islands of Fano, Marlera and Mathrachi. A cave, near the Aspros Ammos (white sands) beach is believed to have been the place where Calypso kept Ulysses captive.

How to get there:

Ferries:

• The ferry "Alexandros" leaves every Tuesday and Saturday the port of Corfu at 6:30am (4 hours). The same boat does day cruises on Sunday during the main tourist season.

• There is a boat every Monday and Thursday (1:30 hours)

• There are tourist boats trips during sommer season leaving for Othoni (2 hours).
