Wanderinsel Symi mit wild lebenden Schildkröten

Gialos ist der Hauptort der griechischen Insel Symi. Sie liegt in der Inselgruppe der Dodekanes im Mittelmeer zwischen den besser bekannten Badeinseln Rhodos und Kos. Gialos ist vor allem bekannt für seine neoklassizistischen Häuser, die zusammen eine imposante Hafenfront bieten. Die Einfahrt der Fähren in den Hafen gehören zu einem der imposantesten Erlebnissen einer Inseltour in den Dodekanesen.

Am besten erlebt man dies, wenn man mit der Fähre von Kos her in Richtung Rhodos unterwegs ist. Die Insel Symi ist zudem ein guter Ort für ausgedehnte Wanderungen auf denen man nur sehr wenige Menschen antrifft. Es wird erzählt, es gebe auf der Insel auch wild lebende Schildkröten. Ich kann das bestätigen, krabbelte doch wirklich eine mitten auf dem Weg, als ich durch den einzigen Wald der Inselgruppe ging. Vorteilhaft ist man dabei aber alleine unterwegs, weil die Tiere bei starken Bodenerschütterungen fliehen.

Leider wird der Hauptort Gialos während den Sommermonaten täglich von Massentouristen aus Rhodos überflutet. Am Abend und in den Morgenstunden bietet der Hafenort dann aber eine spezielle, authentische Atmosphäre, die man sich nicht entgehen lassen sollte.

Gialos is the main town of the greek island of Symi within the island group of the dodekanes. It is situated between the islands of Rhodos and Kos right across the coast of turkey. The town of Gialos is famous for its neoclassical houses which are sourrounded arround a small bay.

There a plenty of romantic tavernas and cafe houses where you can drink greek wine and enjoy the play of incomming and departing ferries. To arrive by ferry at the harbour of Symi is one of the most impressing things if you travel the dodecanese island group. Best seen taking the ferry from Kos heading for Rhodos.

Unfortunately Gialos gets daily overcrowded with day tourists, who spend a day off Rhodos. Once they have left, however, Gialos gets very authentic. Further more the island is a good place for walkers. There are some tours which can take you up to 8 hours. There is even a place where you could come across wild turtles, but you have to be silent and preferably not in a group. Symi it is definately a Island you should not miss.
