The pumic stone island Giali

Gaili is a small neighbourg island between Kos and Nisyros within the island group of the Dodecanese islands in Greece. Today Giali is mainly used to mine Obsidian and Pumice Stone. 20 people have been living on the island up to 1991. Today the island is uninhabited and only visited by the tourist boats from Kos and Nysiros. There are some nice beaches on the island though.

Usage: beach, swimming, archeology

Size: Giali is about 6 kilometers long and 4.5 kilometers wide. The highest point is 180 meter about sea level. It belongs to the rather flat islands of the dodecanese.

Geologie: A beach connects the northeastern part of the island, which consists mainly of Obsidian, and the southwestern part of the island, which consists mainly of pumice stone.

Places to eat: none

Ferries: There are some tourist boats leaving from Kos and Nisyros to the beaches of Giali during the main season from June ot September. Otherwise ask some local fishermen if they bring you to the island. Of course this will be much more expensive, though.
