Agathonisi, the lost island hidden behind Samos

Inhabitants: 100-150

200_agathonisi_5242

Agathonisi (or Agathonissi) is a smal and often forgotten island between Samos and Patmos. The only villages are the harbour village Agios Giorgios, the main village Megalos Horio and the small place Mikro Horio.

Unfortunately there is a military building on the highest point of the island, which prevents you from getting there. On the other side, there are some nice beaches and only a few tourists. Agathonis is the ideal place for people who want to escape busy Samos or Kos. Short after you have arrived you will bie known and the locals greet you.

A one hour walk brings you to the beaches of Tholos, Poros and Tsangari. If you are not in the mood for long walks you can go to Spilia where there is a nice pebble beach, although sometimes noisy because of a storage place of the local bricklayers. Starting from the harbour you will reach the bay of Hohlia in one hour. Head up to Mikro Horio and take the path leading to the bay. There you will find no car and most probably no other traveller too.

Size:
Agathonisis covers about 15 square kilometers

Topography
The highest hill is 208 meters above sea level, rather flat and dry, sparsely trees but tausends of goats. Some nice beaches

The Village
In the main village you will only find a police station but no bank or post office and no petrol station, because there is none on the island. There are one or two shops in all places.

Walking:
There are no marked paths on Agathonisi, but the island too small to get lost. But please walk with strong shoes because of the nasty bushes and sharp rocks. And, never ever forget to carry enough water, it is a real hassle if you do so, because you will hardly find some on your way.

Ferries:
The F/B Nisos Kalymnos connects Agathonisi with Patmos and Samos four times a week .
A Hydrofoil connects Samos und Agathonisi during sommer month.

Sleeping:
Pension Maria Kamitisi: Tel. 22470 29003, at Agios Gorgios, direcly at the water front.
Domatia Giannis: 22470 29062. Behind the restaurant Glaros. Five rooms some with sea view.
