Little Alimia full of History

Alimia is situated in the west of Rhodos and in the east of Chalki. It belongs to the island group of the Dodecanese. There are no people living on the island except a few sheperds who visit the island temporarely.

Size: Alimia has a lenght of 5 kilometers and is 4 Kilometer wide. The highest hills is 274 meters.

Sights: There is a castle fo the Johanniters, where in the past fires lightened for Rhodos. There is a small path which leads in about 30 minutes up to the castel.

History: The island of Alimia hast been used as a naval base during Byzantine times, when the Knight of St. John ruled Rhodos and during Ottoman times. The germans used the island as a base for their submarines. In 1944 the inhabitants of the islands have been deported.

Nature: There are some wells and small forest on the island. There where people living on the island up to the 20. century. There are some ruins and a well kept church to state this. Some nice beaches with cristal clear water can be found too.

Ferries: there are small excursion boats living from Skala Kameirou for the beaches to the island. Furthermore you can ask lokal fishermen on Rhodos or Chalki to take you to the island. A regularly connection is not available.

Flights:

There is no airport on the island, but there is one on Rhodos, where you find plenty of flights from all over Europe.
